What do they look for during a green card marriage interview?

On Behalf of | Sep 21, 2023 | Green Card

A green card marriage interview may be conducted by U.S. immigration authorities when one person petitions for a green card on the part of their new spouse. After all, though there are many different reasons that the government issues green cards, marriage is among the most common. When someone comes to the United States on a visa and marries a U.S. citizen, a green card may be necessary so that they can stay together.

Those who need to go through this interview are often wondering what they can study, what they need to know and what the interviewer is even looking for. They want to prepare for the interview so that they’re ready. But is this even possible?

The legitimacy of the marriage

In short, what the interviewer is looking for is evidence that the marriage itself is legitimate. The two people in question are actually in a romantic relationship, and they want to be married. The green card is certainly a benefit of getting married, but it was not their entire goal.

This means that you generally cannot study for this interview because they may just ask you for details about your personal lives. They want to see that you and your new spouse are not attempting to commit fraud in order to get a green card. When both of you give similar answers to these questions – where did you meet? Where did you get married? Do you want to have children? What are your routines like around the home? – then the interviewer can see that the marriage is real.

Even if you can’t study for this type of interview, going through the process can still be stressful. It’s important to understand all of your legal options to protect your status and your spouse’s status.
